High School & College Portfolio Preparation

Assembling an art portfolio can be a daunting task for students and parents alike.

Whether applying to a specialized High School, or an Art College, Matthew Mahler will guide your child as they develop their artistic voice and build a unique body of work that highlights their strengths, while supporting their artistic goals.

High School Portfolio Development Packages include: 

· Weekly one-to-one work sessions focused on the exploration and development of observational and imagined concepts. 

· Guided sessions with technical demonstrations in various drawing materials  focused on the development of Line, Value and Color.  

· Weekly exposure to art historical references intended to build context and provide insight into each individual’s creative development. 

· Weekly homework assignments designed to reinforce each child’s understanding of relevant concepts. 

· An application check-list designed specifically to showcase your child’s creative strengths and interests. 

(*Recommended for Seventh Graders and Rising Eighth Graders)

College Portfolio Development Packages include:

· Weekly one-to-one work sessions with technical demonstrations in drawing, painting, collage and sculptural techniques. 

· Slide presentations addressing specific contemporary practices in art making intended to promote individual growth unique to your student. 

· Creative prompts personally designed to inspire and direct each artist toward their own unique outcomes. 

· Critical feedback to ensure the completion of a highly competitive and powerful body of work. 

· Strategic pacing to provide timely completion of all relevant application materials.

· Structured support in the development of an effective artist statement.

The mentorship practice has existed within the creative world for centuries and can provide a framework for those looking to take their career to the next level. Breaking into the art world is challenging and rarely a direct process while maintaining a presence can be be even harder. Working with the right mentor can help any aspiring artist navigate common challenges and realize successes while avoiding the many pitfalls that await.

Matthew Mahler has been an active member of the New York City art world for over 15 years playing the role of Artist, Curator and Installation Technician. During his time, he has learned to become an expert organizer and facilitator as well as a competent communicator in order to manage and maintain the social relationships that buttress art world success. With an MFA from CUNY Queens College, a robust CV (5 NYC solo shows within the last decade), Matthew has amassed an abundance of insight and is eager to share his strategies.

Trust is essential in creating a successful mentorship and Matthew’s direct and honest approach to communication is fundamental to the success of his clients. Mahler meets each Mentee where they are in order to ensure growth and success.

With over fifteen years of instructional experience, Matt will create an individualized curriculum designed to guide you or your child as you explore various materials and techniques.
